John Legend and Pharrell Williams Turn Two Decades of Friendship Into New Album ‘Muse’
The 16-track collaboration arrives October 23 with a lead single, “Daylight,” and a deliberately expansive vision of Black musical history.
John Legend has announced Muse, a new studio album produced in full and co-written by Pharrell Williams. The 16-track project is scheduled for release October 23 through Republic Records, making it one of the most substantial new releases on the fall R&B calendar.
The album’s first single, “Daylight,” arrived alongside the announcement after Legend previewed it during CBS’s America’s Tailgate. The collaboration marks the first full project the two artists have made together after more than 20 years of friendship and occasional creative overlap.
Muse is being positioned as a stylistic departure for Legend rather than a straightforward return to his piano-ballad formula. The project draws from gospel, doo-wop, classic soul, Afrobeat, hip-hop and traditional pop, with Pharrell shaping the record around a cinematic sound that the announcement describes as a contemporary “Black James Bond” aesthetic.
The track list includes multiple Pharrell features, appearances by Clipse and songs such as “Pray For Ya,” “Get Back,” “Bodies on the Floor” and “Fireflies.” Legend said the partnership began after his contribution to Clipse’s comeback album inspired Pharrell to build a full album around his voice.
The release also extends a particularly active period for Legend as a cross-disciplinary Black creative. He is preparing the original musical Imitation of Life for The Shed in New York, while his Get Lifted Film Co. remains active in film, television and theater production. Muse gives that broader creative agenda a major musical centerpiece for the final quarter of 2026.
