Kendrick Lamar’s Paramount Film Hits Another Delay as Its Creators Apologize
Trey Parker and Matt Stone say the long-gestating collaboration with Lamar and pgLang remains alive, but the project no longer has a public release date.
The Kendrick Lamar feature film being developed with South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone has been delayed again, prompting a public apology from the filmmakers on September 9. In a statement to The Ankler, Parker and Stone accepted responsibility for the stalled schedule and said they still believe in the project. The statement also acknowledged the patience of Lamar’s pgLang and Paramount, the studio financing and distributing the movie.
The film, known internally by the working title Whitney Springs, was previously assigned release dates in July 2025 and March 2026. It currently has no announced theatrical date. TheWrap reports that the movie is being positioned as an original live-action comedy, with Lamar and Dave Free producing through pgLang and Parker and Stone producing through Park County.
Paramount has not publicly released a full synopsis, but trade reports have described a story centered on a Black man who works as a slave reenactor at a living-history museum and becomes entangled with the history of a white family and a Midwestern town. That premise places race, performance and the commercial packaging of Black history at the center of a project led by creators best known for provocation and political satire.
The delay is especially notable because the film represents Lamar’s most ambitious narrative-screen collaboration since pgLang expanded from music into broader film, television and creative development. It also would be Parker and Stone’s first feature film in more than two decades, increasing the stakes around a production that has already become a symbol of Hollywood’s difficulty getting original, star-driven comedy to market.
For now, the confirmed news is limited but consequential: the creators say the film is still active, while Paramount has not supplied a revised timetable. Any reports about a finished cut, a new release date or alleged creative disputes remain not_verified unless the studio or filmmakers confirm them directly.
